FUNDAMENTALS OF PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY (FOR MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS)

 COURSE DESCRIPTION AND AIM

 

The main groups of drugs with an effect on the CNS with classification and names and focus on psychotropic substances will be presented. Peculiarities in the structure of drugs, routes of administration, dosage, types of drug effect and mechanisms of action of drug substances will be covered. The main effects of psychotropic drugs and their side effects will be discussed. Attention will be paid to new directions in the development of drugs and future directions in the development of neuro- and psycho-pharmacology.

   

 

 

COURSE CONTENT:

 

1

Central nervous system - structure and function. Types of mediators and receptors. Basic principles of neuro- and psycho-pharmacology

2

Sedatives, hypnotics, anxiolytics

3

Antidepressants. Antipsychotics. Antiepileptics.

4

Drugs for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and pain of CNS origin

5

Pharmacological approaches in addictions and stress reactions.

 

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES 

 

Students who complete this course:

 

1) will know:

  • Differentiate between traditional and atypical antipsychotics used to treat psychosis
  • Differences between the main classes of antidepressants
  • The unique psychopharmacological mechanisms of action of the main classes of drugs used in this field of medicine
  • Approaches to coping with addictions

2) will be able to:

  • To evaluate ADR / overdose / addiction in patients on drug therapy from some of the commented groups.
