 COURSE DESCRIPTION AND AIM

 

The course makes an introduction in the the problems and experiences of patients and their families in situation of reporting bad news in medical practice, the stages of transitioning through the crisis, emotions and problems, as well as the principles of working with the patients and techniques for overcoming difficulties. A special focus on working with the team for development of skills to work with their own emotions in situations communication of the bad news is placed

 

     

COURSE CONTENT:

Reporting bad news in medical practice, principles of communication

Organization of the environment in communicating bad news in medical practice, specific verbal expressions, communicative behaviour

3

Methods and techniques to help patients and their families in a situation of reporting bad news in medical practice

4

Working with patients in a crisis situation - case study

5

Working with patients for long-term support - case study

6

Working with transference and countertransference in the situation of reporting bad news in medical practice

 

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES 

 

Students who complete this course:

 

1) will know:

 

 

  • The process of reporting bad news in medicine
  • Factors related to the experiences of patients and their families in a crisis situation

 

2) will be able to:

 

  • To participate in a team in situations related to a crisis in medical practice

 

 

Tutorassoc. prof. Margarita Stankova, MD, PhD
 
 
Prof. Margarita Stankova, MD, PhD, graduated from the Medical University, Sofia, specialty Psychiatry and a Master's program in "Communication Infringements" at the NBU and doctoral program "Language and Speech Pathology" at the NBU. She has successfully completed courses and trainings at NTNU, Trondheim, Iavante Foundation, Granada. Since 2013 he has been an Associate Professor of “Public Health” at NBU at the Department of “Health and Social Work”. Since 2014 she has been the director of the Center for Therapy for Communicational and Emotional Behavioural Disorders at NBU. Head of the Department of “Health and Social Work” from 2016
The scientific and practical interests of Assoc. prof. Margarita Stankova are in the field of psychopathology, developmental disorders, communicative disorders, autism spectrum disorders, integration of children with special educational needs, etiological mechanisms and the role of the environment for the occurrence of the violations, programs for therapy, evaluation of the effect of therapeutic interventions
prof. Margarita Stankova is the author of four monographs in the field of developmental disruptions and 62 publications in this field. She has edited seven editions on the topic, participated in 15 scientific and applied projects in the field of work with children with developmental disabilities.
